“The last refuge of the insomniac is a sense of superiority to the sleeping world.”
― Leonard Cohen
Sleepwalkers
- is a surreal photographic exploration of insomnia, altered consciousness, and the architecture of the unconscious mind.
The series emerged from a period of extended sleeplessness that culminated in a dissociative psychotic episode — a harrowing yet strangely illuminating descent into an alternate reality. Years later, the experience remains unresolved, haunting my creative process and shaping my fascination with the phenomenon of sleep itself.
Each night, we willingly surrender to a state that mimics coma, crossing the veil of consciousness into a realm of fragmented hallucinations — only to awaken hours later with little or no memory of our psychological journey. This paradoxical erasure became a symbolic framework for a new visual language, one that I translate through photography.
The images were originally captured in an abandoned farmhouse — a dilapidated structure frozen in frost and decay. The air was heavy, the walls trembling with collapse. This physical environment mirrored the inner landscape of prolonged sleep deprivation: disjointed, uncanny, and suspended in time. As the work evolved, I recognized it as a manifestation of a recurring dream I’ve had since childhood — a boundless, labyrinthine mansion that exists inside my mind.
Each room in this mental house opens to another, forming an endless loop. Time dissolves. Space folds. Monsters whisper from the corners, joy flickers through fractured windows, but safety is rarely present. Sleepwalkers is a map of that internal space — a place where trauma and imagination entwine, and the mind becomes both prisoner and architect.
